HOW DOES THE I CHING WORK?

UNLOCKING PERSONAL AND SPIRITUAL TRANSFOMATION WITH THE I CHING
The I Ching is a powerful tool that offers guidance for personal and spiritual growth. Its ancient wisdom is as applicable today as it was 3000 years ago, enabling seekers to connect with their purpose and essence. The I Ching serves as both a Taoist wisdom book and an oracle, providing insight into the current situation of the querent, forecasting the direction of change, and recommending the best way to adapt to it. By shedding light on the present and pointing towards the future, it allows us to align ourselves with the natural forces of the world and “go with the flow.” My coaching services offer two emails per reading where I work with you to put the I Ching’s wisdom into practice in your life.
WHAT IS THE i CHING?
The I Ching or Book of Changes is an ancient Taoist, sapiential and oracular book which origins date back to the Zhou period of ancient China, some 3000 years ago. It contains within its pages a philosophy of life based on the observation and emulation of the forces of Nature. It proposes that the same forces that affect Nature and the Cosmos affect human beings, since we are also Nature and made of the same stuff as everything else. Those who follows Nature’s way will find the spontaneous and natural way of directing one’s own life, knowing, as Nature does, the appropriate moment for action or for waiting.
“Those who flow as life flows, know that they need no other force”. Lao Tze
The I Ching is used as a powerful tool for personal and spiritual transformation. Enclosed within its pages we find ancient wisdom that is as relevant now as it was back then, capable of transforming the life of the seeker and putting them directly in touch with their essence and purpose.
The I Ching, besides being a book of Taoist wisdom, is also an oracle that describes the present situation of the querent, expresses the direction of the change that is already occurring and advises the most natural way to relate to this change. By clarifying the present and pointing to the direction of change, it also clarifies the future. It is an oracular tool to align ourselves with the elemental forces of nature and “swim in the direction in which the river flows”.
When we consult the I Ching we recognise ourselves as part of the flow of Nature and understand that the Universe and we are one organism. What is true for the Universe and Nature is true for us; we are the same.
The ancient Taoists considered that at its origin the Universe is the Oneness, the One, the Nothingness, Wu-Chi. From the Universe arise two forces, Yin and Yang (or the Receptive and the Creative, the Feminine and the Masculine) and through their interaction all things are created, which the ancient Chinese called “the 10,000 things”.
The I Ching shows the interaction of 8 symbols or trigrams which are derived from the elements of Nature: Heaven – the Creative, Earth – the Receptive, Wind – the Gentle, Water – the Abysmal, Mountain – the Stilling, Thunder – the Stirring, Fire – the Adhesive, Lake – the Serene. The interaction of these trigrams generates 64 hexagrams that describe the course of the 10,000 things. The I Ching is a book that describes the state of constant change and transformation of the 10,000 things and thus teaches us that change is the only constant.
The changes that occur in Nature serve a purpose: they are productive, they contribute to the development of everything. Nature does not understand favouritism; it does not prefer summer to autumn, nor sunshine to rain. These changes occur in a cyclical and generative way and are intended to favour transformation and development; they are all necessary for life to take its course. Anxiety is the result of preventing the natural process of transformation from occurring in you. Anxiety ceases when a change of perspective occurs in you: you begin to dance to the rhythm of Nature and allow its comings and goings to transform you, as the weather transforms the landscape. The I Ching is a great companion on this journey, as it puts you in touch with your own intuition and inner wisdom.
HOW TO USE THE I CHING?
The trigrams of the I Ching describe 8 Natural forces that are agents of change and transformation. The I Ching explains their usefulness, and how to use them to generate transformation in oneself and undo stagnation. The questioner receives as an answer to his question two trigrams that combined form a hexagram. By reading the image, the judging and the changing lines of the spread, if any, one discovers the path to follow at the crossroads.

The I Ching is consulted using 50 sticks (formerly Yarrow stalks) or 3 coins. A number of rolls of the sticks or coins are made to uncover one by one the 6 lines that make up the initial hexagram. This hexagram is taken as the descriptive answer to the current situation of the client, and also its opposite hexagram as the underlying non-visible cause and its nuclear hexagram as the central cause of the situation. The initial hexagram in some cases can be “mutant”, that is to say that it becomes another hexagram, and this describes where the situation is moving towards. Image, Judgement and lines offer guidance as to how to move in accordance with the situation.
